SSPCA’s Prevention Through Education Programme

Jun. 20th 2017

That the Parliament welcomes the SSPCA’s Prevention through Education programme, which is the largest free outreach programme in Scotland; understands that the project consists of interactive, game-based workshops led by education officers, animal rescue officers and inspectors, which encourage children to treat animals with compassion and respect; notes that in 2016, 75% of primary schools in Scotland were visited, with the programme fitting four capacities of the curriculum for excellence for children in P4-7; understands that in the last five years, there has been a 382% increase in the number of calls from children reporting injured wildlife or cases of neglect, and a decline in the number of children involved in animal abuse; acknowledges that ongoing research with the University of Edinburgh has found that the programme has increased knowledge and more positive attitudes toward animals, and a decrease in the tolerance of animal cruelty among children, and wishes the SSPCA continued success with its programme.
