Justice Committee publishes report on Assisted Suicide

Jan. 13th 2015

The Justice Committee, which is the secondary Committee considering the Assisted Suicide (Scotland) Bill (the primary committee being Health and Sport), recently published it’s report to the Health and Sport Committee.

It’s remit was to consider the legal implications of the Bill, not moral or ethical ones.

The published its report  is available here: http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/parliamentarybusiness/CurrentCommittees/85275.aspx

The Health and Sport Committee will begin taking oral evidence on the Bill on 13 January, where they will hear from the legal and medical professions.  The Committee expects to take evidence until the end of February and plan to publish a report in the spring. The whole Parliament will then get an opportunity to debate and vote on the general principles of the Bill.

The Bill is in the early stages at the moment but respondents such as the Law Society have grave concerns about the drafting of the Bill and the lack of clarity in the provisions.

Scottish Grocers Federation at the Parliament

Jan. 7th 2015

Margaret today met with representatives from the Scottish Grocers Federation. The SGF represents grocers and convenience store owners, who play a key role in local communities, at a time when large supermarket chains are reducing the already slim profit margins of local shops.
