Title: 5.5 Million People Enjoy a Wheely Great Time

Motion Text:

That the Parliament welcomes the recent announcement by Scottish Canals that the Falkirk Wheel has enjoyed its most successful summer in eight years, with visitor numbers now topping 5.5 million; notes that visits to the world’s only rotating boat lift were up 30% in the summer of 2014 compared with the same period last year; understands that the Falkirk Wheel has attracted visitors from around the world as well as Scots who are keen to marvel at the engineering feat of the boat lift and take a trip on canal boats through the working sculpture that links the Forth and Clyde Canal to the Union Canal 35m, or 115ft, above it; understands that the Falkirk Wheel is Scotland’s busiest tourist attraction outwith a city centre location and has added a number of additional attractions, such as bike hire, towpaths to the Kelpies and an interactive mini-canal and water play park, to the site in order to continue to attract visitors to the area all year round; considers that this increase in visitors adds to a very eventful year for Scottish Canals, with the opening of the Kelpies, two majestic monuments to horse-powered heritage, at The Helix and the development of its Living on Water initiative, which aims to create vibrant houseboat communities across Scotland including Falkirk district, and looks forward to the continued success of the Falkirk Wheel, which, it believes, remains the jewel of the crown in Scottish Canals’ operations.
