The week of 2nd -7th November was Dyslexia Awareness Week, now in its 20th year. To mark the occasion the Scottish Parliament’s Cross Party Group on Dyslexia, of which I am convener, held an event entitled  ‘Hidden Dyslexia: The Social and Economic Costs.’ and welcomed Sir Jackie Stewart, Scottish motor racing legend and President of Dyslexia Scotland, as principal guest speaker. Sir Jackie was also joined by guest speaker Councillor Harry McGuigan, Convenor of the COSLA, Executive Group on Wellbeing and Safety.

The evening was a huge success and highlighted the work done by Dyslexia Scotland and the progress made in Scotland towards identifying those with dyslexia. The evening was well-attend with individual MSPs from all the main parties, staff from Dyslexia Scotland and members of the Cross Party Group on Dyslexia present. It was a great pleasure to welcome Sir Jackie to the Scottish Parliament, where he has been a terrific ambassador for Dyslexia Scotland and has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about dyslexia. I very much hope  that the event and the continued work of Sir Jackie, Dyslexia Scotland and the parliamentary cross-party group continues will help those in Scotland with dyslexia.

This November I arranged a visit and tour of the Scottish Parliament for 4th and 5th year Modern Studies pupils from my old secondary school, Coatbridge High. The visit began with a tour of the Parliament, taking in, for example, the Debating Chamber and Garden Lobby and giving the pupils an insight into how the Parliament works. The tour was followed by a question and answer session where the pupils asked carefully considered, initial and follow up questions about the parliament and my work as an MSP.
